About Aedan Hanley
Aedan Hanley is a contemporary painter based in Baja California, Mexico. His practice moves between psychologically charged figuration and registered abstraction, using saturated color, layered marks, text, and visible revision to explore the friction between what people present and what slips through.
Hanley first studied fine art and design at the University of Wisconsin before building a career in education and psychology, ultimately earning a doctorate in psychology. He returned to full-time studio practice following retirement in 2023. That background informs his interest in behavior, perception, memory, defense, and contradiction—but the paintings remain visual rather than clinical inquiries.
Across bodies of work including SE Nos Nota, Public Behaviors, and In The Margins, figures perform, defend, withdraw, posture, and miscommunicate while abstract systems shift, overlap, and slip out of alignment. The work is intended to register immediately from across a room, then become more complicated the longer a viewer stays with it.
The Work
My practice moves between psychologically charged figuration and registered abstraction. Across both, I’m interested in the traces pressure leaves—social, emotional, and material—and in the moment when a surface, a gesture, or a phrase stops behaving as intended.
In the figurative work, faces, bodies, and fragments of language function less as portraits than as behaviors. They posture, defend, withdraw, perform, and miscommunicate. Saturated color, raw drawing, scraped passages, and visible edits keep the image unsettled enough to remain psychologically alive. Humor, tenderness, and unease often occupy the same space.
In the abstract work, repetition and imperfect registration create a different kind of instability. Systems line up, slip, overlap, and leave residue. Whether figurative or abstract, I want the paintings to register immediately, then become less certain—and more complex—the longer someone stays with them.
